Get FOSS in the street - Software Freedom Day 2008

If you are a user of free and Open Source software you should consider joining as a participant or, better, help organize your local event. Last year 330 teams all around the world joined the event.

Why is it so important ?

Free and Open Source Software is often considered a thing for geeks, wired head and other computer scientistw, in fact it’s often the case, but not completely and while academics and businesses have been reaping the benefit of using Free software, the Software Freedom Day is there to get FOSS in the street, to make it “popular”.

Do simple things, check first the event in your region (http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/map.shtml) and if you happened to do one thing, distribute CDs with Free Softwares, like the OpenDisc that contains FOSS for the windows Platform or a GNU/Linux Ubuntu or fedora live CD.

You can make presentation, install parties, big dinner at your local pub/restaurant, make a lan party, a question and answer contest,  have a rock band. What you have to make sure is to make your average geek to talk to ordinary people, give them fliers and CD. I have been organizing such event for the last 4 years and one thing that works well is to make preinstalled workstation with GNU/linux available for people to try.

So september 20th 2008, Free Sof tware will storm the street !! As of myself  I will either be back with my friends of  Hanoi Linux User Group  while in mission or with my local group in quebec city which is my home town.
