Last week was the FOSS-bridge in Hanoi, For those who don’t know yet, it is a match making between european companies and Vietnamese companies in the field of Free and Open Source Software. Nice initiative, especially that they want generate interest for more sharing and more equality between european and vietnamese hackers. That’s the good part because not everyone was taking that seriously, european and vietnamese included. I can’t talk much since I attended only one morning and did a presentation with Quynh on why it is important to have a LUG in your city. I was the first arrived and we started in the confusion 30 minutes after the time we should have started.
Note to self : we need geek stuff in Ha Noi to generate open source buzz, not companies…
Anyway, it is always great to non-profit and donors to care about FOSS
Coincidentally there was also David Axmark in town, 3 hanoilugers met him as his hotel. (another lost opportunity, how come there was so few of us) He also went the morning after. to the FOSS bridge conference. I almost lost my cool. People were asking silly questions things you would never ask if you had read the GPL or spent one week in an open source conference/workshop.
Lost opportunity and note to self : If you do something about FOSS and you are unsure about how people understand it. Then please take the time to explain and discuss the various concepts, especially open source licencing and what is source code and how Free Software Projects handle it.
During the very same conference, one european hacker decided to have a BarCamp in Ha Noi, december 1st. Now that’s a cool thing to have. Disruptive hacker style stuff, DIY conference with a little bit of free culture jamming. Head your browser over http://barcamp.org/BarCampHanoi1. There’s nothing yet on the page. I saw the details, it will be about web2.0 (what else…)
Another announcement there will be a linux for newbie course at the CNF with HanoiLUG volunteers.
End of the busy week, back to some work
