Viet Nam entered WTO in November and is starting to understand to full extent of what’s happening. With the the stock exchange bubbling and ready to burst (and follow the Shanghai example) Vietnam has second thoughts about WTO
An I truly think the headaches will worsen as other players will enter Viet Nam and start collecting their dividend of the the “free market”. I’m thinking about big guys here
Obeying international intellectual property rights, software copyrights included, must be done. Yet, how Vietnam will pay for these rights is a matter of great anxiety. VIETNAM IS TO PAY BILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR SOFTWARE COPYRIGHTS
My usual readers know that there’s a solution to reduce the cost an improve the capacity of the IT industry in Viet Nam (by using Free and Open Source Software) but I will let Chris Atkinson, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Microsoft Asia Pacific explain it :
Q: Have you got any concerns about Vietnam’s adoption of open source software? Will your market share affected? Is there any possibility that open-source software will someday dominate the market?
A: I believe strongly in the term co-opetition. It is about co-operation and competition. Specifically with open-source, we work with them in some instances, and we compete with them in other instances. This is healthy competition and as industry/IT partners, we need to continue to co-exist with open-source. Businesses and customers need to be able to assess for themselves the overall business value proposition of the platform, and decide for themselves which works better for them.
