Everyone has heard about it. It is not new anymore. The gentoo guy quit and has accepted a job in Redmond
Why should everyone being “scared about such move”, why shouldn’t see that as a good thing, for everybody, from the hardcore unix hacker to the lambda user ? This thing about Embrace, Extend and Extinguish is a serious accusation, but I don’t believe it is a real threat to what I believe to be the future of computing.
Microsoft is embracing open source philosophy in order to have better products because this company has lost the lead :
- Third world is waking up on Intellectual property issues and while Brazil adopts open-source software. Others may think about doing the same.
- More developped countries are giving head start to the flying star of the open source world :Europe adopts open source Firefox browser
- Open source ideas are spreading beyond software, it is a fact : What is open source marketing
Embrace, extend and extinguish is going against Microsoft. The IT world will always be bigger than a single company, even a gigantic one…
