The “update” technician

What’s bother me a lot is when I arrive somewhere and see a bunch old P2 with windows 98(tm) that have never been updated since their last clean install, yes you heard it well, 1998 it’s more than 6 years ago, no kidding.

Here is one real case: one computer used for sending email and acting as local mail server. Everything installed on this computer isn’t genuine, don’t even bother to ask me I’m living in Viet Nam, where about 97% of all software isn’t genuine. The user just turned on the “scanning” ougoing mail and soon the task bar is filled up with Symantec(tm) outgoing scan queue. And the poor computer is acting alone without the help of any user…

Hypothesis : this always on, always online computer is in fact a zombie computer

Reaction : Shut mail server and update OS via Windows Update(tm) ( there’s reasons to not use windows update even if you didn’t pay for it)

Result : 28 critical updates

I ask : you never update the computer ?

Answer : yes, every friday, the techncian comes and update the computer

Conclusion : Never trust the computer technician when he tells you “I’m updating your computer” he might be doing something else !!!
